The Importance of Back Pain Chiropractic

Back pain can come from numerous sources. Pain can come from the joints, ligaments, discs and muscles. Restriction of movement and referred pain are common.

Back-related pain can be local or referred from muscles, ligaments and nerves. Muscles and ligaments can be strained or sprained. Back spinal joints that are inflamed and or arthritic can also be a source of pain. Restricted movement is common.

Spinal misalignment (and abnormal spinal bio-mechanics) are very common and the effect of these left uncorrected in the body is the major cause of back pain. The nerves in the upper lumbar spine supply the groin, thigh and knee so when they get irritated they can refer pain into these areas. The nerves in the lower lumbar spine supply the hamstring, calf and foot so when they get irritated they can refer pain to these areas. People that sit down for long periods are especially prone to back pain. Improper lifting technique (bending and twisting) and lifting stuff that’s too heavy is also a major cause of back pain.

Massey Family Chiropractor’s Back Pain Treatment Method

The chiropractor will examine your entire spine for spinal misalignment (and abnormal spinal bio-mechanics). The more misalignment that you have the more stress on your discs as well as your joints, ligaments and muscles. Chiropractors correct spinal misalignment with what we call an adjustment. With regard to back pain postural assessment is especially important. Chiropractors examine you from the feet up so flat feet, a short leg and muscle imbalances are looked for. Postural correction exercises and muscle release exercises are usually given.

Treatment Outcomes – What To Expect

Back pain chiropractic treatment may reduce or resolve your pain. Unfortunately, most people have imbalances in their spine and don’t realise it. It’s only when they experience pain that they make the decision to do something about it. Success is dependent on many factors. How long the problem has been there, the amount of wear and tear (as seen on x-ray), whether there is referred pain, job posture, and stress/social factors all have an impact on treatment outcomes.

Expect professional, up-to-date dedicated care with plenty of education and helpful advice. Understand that you are not locked into any treatment plan and can stop care at any time.

Back Pain FAQs

Can a chiropractor help with back pain?

Chiropractic care may help some people manage musculoskeletal back pain, improve movement and return to normal daily activities. The appropriate treatment will depend on the cause of your symptoms, how long they have been present and your general health.

At Massey Family Chiropractic, we begin with an assessment so we can better understand your symptoms and determine whether chiropractic care may be suitable for you.

What happens at my first back pain chiropractic appointment?

Your first appointment usually includes a discussion about your symptoms, health history, work, posture, physical activity and any previous injuries.

Your chiropractor may also assess your spinal movement, posture, muscles, joints and other factors that could be contributing to your back pain. Your findings and treatment options will then be explained before care begins.

What types of back pain do chiropractors commonly assess?

People visit chiropractors for many different forms of musculoskeletal back pain, including:

  • lower back pain
  • upper and middle back discomfort
  • stiffness or restricted movement
  • back pain related to prolonged sitting
  • pain after lifting or physical activity
  • pain associated with muscle or joint irritation
  • back pain that may extend into the buttock or leg

Because back pain can have many possible causes, an individual assessment is important.

How many back pain chiropractic appointments will I need?

There is no standard number of appointments that suits everyone. The recommended approach will depend on the cause and severity of your pain, how long it has been present, your response to care and your personal goals.

Your chiropractor should explain the proposed treatment approach and review your progress over time. You are not locked into a treatment plan and may stop care at any time.

Are chiropractic back treatments painful?

Chiropractic care should be adapted to the individual. Some techniques use controlled spinal adjustments, while others may involve gentler mobilisation, soft-tissue work, stretches or exercises. In general, chiropractic adjustments are not painful, though if you are already in severe pain from an acute injury or muscle spasm, you may feel temporary discomfort during manipulation.

Your chiropractor will explain the proposed approach and can adjust the technique according to your comfort, age, health and preferences.

Should I see a chiropractor for sudden back pain?

Sudden back pain may follow lifting, exercise, an awkward movement or another physical strain. However, the appropriate first step depends on the severity of the pain, how it began and whether other symptoms are present.

Contact the clinic to discuss whether a chiropractic assessment is appropriate. Seek urgent medical attention if the pain followed a serious accident or is accompanied by warning signs such as bladder or bowel changes, numbness around the groin, significant leg weakness, fever or rapidly worsening symptoms.

Can sitting at a desk contribute to back pain?

Long periods of sitting may contribute to stiffness and discomfort, particularly when combined with limited movement, an unsuitable workstation or reduced physical activity.

Your chiropractor may assess your posture and movement patterns and suggest practical changes such as workstation adjustments, movement breaks, stretches or strengthening exercises.
